Sightsavers

Imagine the devastation of losing your sight: the loss of independence, the complete vulnerability… and then imagine losing your sigh when you live in a country that cannot support you throughout it all.

Sightsavers is an international charity that has worked for the last fifty years supporting sight-impaired people in over 30 countries across Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. They not only provide aid to those who have lost their sight for life, but also aim to restore vision for those suffering from cataracts. In 2007, their efforts helped restore the sight of almost 250 thousand people.

The work of Sighsavers focuses on the following three areas:

  • Social inclusion - helping visually impaired people to receive training and independence through employment, as well as ensuring blind children are fully educated
  • Rehabilitation – teaching basic skills such as cooking or navigation around the local area to ensure independence is a possibility, as well as providing vocational training.
  • The provision of essential aids such as white canes or educational materials in Braille.

Your donation could greatly improve the quality of life for a blind person in a developing country – or maybe even save someone’s sight altogether.

How the charity works

Through their work with local partners, Sightsavers plans to build and maintain sustainable care for the blind and visually impaired. Donations to the cause will help this plan immeasurably, not matter how small. Just 5p can protect people from river blindness for 12 months, while £10 can provide 4 white canes. For those in danger of losing their sight entirely, £17 can pay for a cataract operation.

Because of this, single donations are just as vital as longterm commitments. Just a few pence can change lives and give the gift of sight to someone in need.
